The Years That Matter Most

For many of us, puppyhood and adolescence receive the greatest attention. We spend months preparing, teaching, learning and navigating the challenges that come with raising a young dog.

But those stages pass surprisingly quickly.

The years that follow are where life really happens.

This is where morning walks become familiar routines, quiet evenings become cherished moments and everyday life settles into the relationship you've spent so long building. Adult dogs aren't projects waiting to be completed. They are companions to be understood, enjoyed and appreciated for who they are.

CDD invites us to see adulthood differently. Rather than continually searching for the next behaviour to improve or the next problem to solve, we begin asking a different question.

How do we help our dogs live the richest, happiest and most fulfilling lives possible?

Throughout this course, we'll explore how communication, understanding and thoughtful guidance continue long after adolescence has ended. We'll look at supporting emotional wellbeing, maintaining confidence, adapting to changing needs and strengthening the relationship you've built through every stage of adult life.

As the years pass, our dogs begin to change once again. Their pace may slow, their needs may evolve and they may need us in different ways than they once did. Growing older isn't something to fear. It's another chapter of the relationship, one that deserves the same patience, compassion and understanding we've offered from the very beginning.

Because while puppyhood captures our attention...

Adulthood and the senior years capture our hearts.

This course is about making those years as meaningful, comfortable and joyful as they can be, helping your dog live well, age well and continue sharing life's adventures with you every step of the way.

Is This Course for You?

If you believe that sharing your life with a dog is about so much more than training behaviours, this course was created for you.

Perhaps you don't spend your walks thinking about the next cue to practise or the next trick to teach. Instead, you find yourself wondering how to help your dog feel happier, more fulfilled and more understood. You want to enrich their life, communicate more deeply, strengthen your relationship and make the most of every stage you share together.

Whether your dog is enjoying the prime of adulthood or beginning to slow into their senior years, this course is for those who want to embrace every moment. It's for the people who know that the greatest achievement isn't a perfectly trained dog, but a life lived side by side with a companion who feels safe, understood and genuinely happy.

If you want to move beyond simply asking what your dog can do for you and instead begin asking what kind of life you can create together, you'll feel right at home here.

Because the richest relationships aren't measured by the number of behaviours a dog has learned.

They're measured by the life you've shared together.

About this course

  • The curriculum will grow when the course is launched.

This Isn't a Training Course... and That's Deliberate.

If you're looking for a course that teaches your adult dog new tricks or focuses on refining behaviours, this probably isn't the course you were expecting.

That's because CDD doesn't begin by asking what more your dog needs to learn.

It begins by asking what kind of life your dog is living.

By adulthood, many dogs already know far more than we realise. What they often need isn't another cue or another behaviour to master. They need purpose. They need meaningful experiences. They need opportunities to explore, make choices, solve problems, communicate and continue engaging with the world around them. Most of all, they need to feel that they belong, not simply as a pet that lives in our home, but as a valued member of our family.

Throughout this course, we'll explore what true enrichment really means. It goes far beyond puzzle toys, treat searches or teaching the next trick, although those things can certainly have their place if your dog genuinely enjoys them. Real enrichment is about creating a life that allows your dog to express who they are, enjoy the things that matter to them and remain emotionally, socially and cognitively engaged throughout adulthood and into their senior years.

As our dogs grow older, their needs naturally begin to change. Their bodies may slow, their senses may alter and their cognition may evolve, but their need for understanding, purpose and connection remains just as important as ever. Rather than focusing on what our dogs can no longer do, CDD encourages us to discover new ways for them to continue enjoying life, solving problems, making choices and feeling included in the world they share with us.

That doesn't mean learning comes to an end. Dogs continue learning throughout their lives. The difference is that learning is no longer centred around performance. Instead, it becomes about supporting wellbeing, maintaining confidence, encouraging curiosity and helping our dogs continue living rich, fulfilling lives.

Because adulthood and the senior years aren't about teaching dogs how to fit into our lives.

They're about embracing who they are and making the life we share together the very best it can be.

  • Is this suitable for first-time owners?

Absolutely. Whether you're welcoming your very first dog or you've lived with dogs for many years, the course has been designed to support you through every stage of adulthood.

  • Does it matter what stage of adulthood my dog is in?

Not at all. This course explores the unique needs of dogs throughout adulthood, from young adults finding their place in the world, through the settled years of adulthood, to the changing needs of senior and elderly dogs. Some lessons focus on particular life stages, while many of the principles apply throughout your dog's adult life. Wherever your dog is on that journey, you'll find practical guidance to help you enrich their life, strengthen your relationship and support their wellbeing.

  • Is this a training course?

No. While we'll explore practical skills and everyday guidance, this course is about much more than teaching behaviours. Through Canine Dialogue Dynamics (CDD), you'll learn how to understand and support your adolescent dog through one of the most significant stages of their development, helping them grow into a confident, emotionally secure and adaptable adult. It's about raising the individual behind the behaviour, not simply changing the behaviour itself.

  • What if I have questions during the course?

Questions are welcomed throughout the live teaching sessions, and you'll also have access to our student community, where you can continue discussions and learn alongside other students.

  • Do I need to use treats, tools or corrections?

No. Everything taught within this course is based on the principles of fear-free, force-free and tool-free learning, helping you build trust, confidence and communication without relying on aversive methods or equipment.

  • I'm a dog trainer or behaviour professional. Is this course suitable for me?

Absolutely. While this course has been designed with guardians in mind, many trainers, behaviourists, veterinary professionals and other canine professionals also join to broaden their understanding of canine development and explore the principles of Canine Dialogue Dynamics (CDD). Whether you're looking to support your own clients or simply develop a fresh perspective, you're very welcome.

  • Will I receive CPD hours?

Yes. Many professionals choose to include this course as part of their own Continuing Professional Development (CPD). A Certificate of Completion is provided at the end of the course, allowing you to record your learning in accordance with the requirements of your own professional body or organisation.

  • Is this course suitable if I'm getting a rescue dog?

Yes. Whether your dog comes from a breeder, a rescue organisation or another background, the principles of communication, understanding and relationship-building remain the same. Every dog deserves the opportunity to feel safe, understood and supported.

  • Do I need any previous experience?

Not at all. Whether this is your first dog or you've shared your life with dogs for decades, the course has been designed to be accessible, practical and thought-provoking.

  • Do I need to stop training my dog?

Not at all. This course isn't about rejecting training. It's about recognising that raising a dog is about far more than training alone. CDD helps you build the emotional, social and relational foundations that allow learning to become more meaningful. If you choose to teach specific skills, you'll do so within a much broader understanding of your dog as an individual.

  • Will this course tell me exactly what to do?

Rather than offering rigid rules or one-size-fits-all techniques, CDD helps you understand your individual dog and develop the confidence to make thoughtful decisions together. Every dog is different, and this course is designed to help you build the skills to understand and support the dog in front of you.

  • What if I can't keep up each week?

There's no pressure to keep pace with the live programme. Because you'll have lifetime access to the course and all recordings, you can revisit the material whenever it suits you and learn at your own pace.

Instructor(s)

Bethany Bell

Founder

I've been working with dogs and their guardians since 2010, beginning my career as a dog trainer before becoming increasingly fascinated by the emotional, social and cognitive lives of dogs. In 2016, I became degree qualified in Animal Behaviour and Welfare, and in 2017 I began working professionally as a behaviourist, specialising in reactivity and separation anxiety, both of which I've also experienced personally through my own rescue dogs. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with thousands of puppies, adolescent dogs, adults and seniors, as well as welcoming rescue dogs and foster dogs into my own home. Those experiences continually reinforced one simple belief: behaviour can never truly be understood in isolation from the individual experiencing it. I was professionally accredited for a period of time, but eventually chose to step away. As my understanding evolved, I realised I didn't want to reshape the ideas I was developing simply to fit within someone else's framework. Instead, I wanted the freedom to continue questioning, learning and following the evidence wherever it led. In 2020, my perspective on dogs changed profoundly. I began looking beyond behaviour itself and exploring communication, emotion, attachment, cognition and relationships in far greater depth. Between 2020 and 2023, those ideas gradually developed into what is now Canine Dialogue Dynamics (CDD), which officially launched in October 2023. Today, CDD is at the heart of everything I teach. Rather than focusing primarily on changing behaviour, it encourages us to understand the dog behind the behaviour, building communication, confidence and trust through everyday life. My work combines scientific understanding with practical guidance, helping people develop thoughtful, compassionate relationships that support dogs from puppyhood through to their senior years. Above all, I believe our role isn't simply to train dogs what to do. It's to help them understand the world they live in, develop confidence in themselves, and build relationships where both dogs and humans can learn, grow and thrive together. That philosophy underpins every course, article and live session I create. My own rescue dogs have been among my greatest teachers, continually reminding me that understanding and compassion achieve things that techniques alone never can. Everything I teach is guided by my belief that dogs deserve to be understood, not controlled. My work is firmly rooted in fear-free, force-free and tool-free principles, with a strong commitment to protecting both emotional and physical wellbeing. I believe the all meaningful relationships are built through communication, trust and compassion, and I advocate against the use of aversive methods and equipment in all aspects of life with dogs.
